Architecture

Site Office designs new architectural interventions that respond to the specific characteristics of each site and the needs of building users. Our approach to contemporary contextual design explores vernacular architecture, local materials and craft techniques, and sometimes takes cues from the building’s original architect. We look to traditional buildings and modern technologies to learn new ways to reduce energy consumption, use low-impact materials and develop resiliency to our changing climate. Our designs are responsive, practical and help users to access and experience historic sites in new ways.

Adaptive Reuse

Adapting old structures to accommodate new uses is a philosophical and practical response to meeting today’s needs and keeping historic buildings alive. The sensitive repurposing of historic sites is a mainstay of Site Office’s experience. Our adaptive reuse projects provide environmentally and financially sustainable models for delivering clients’ requirements while encouraging people to experience and become part of their architectural heritage.

Heritage Planning

Site Office has particular experience helping historic sites welcome visitors while protecting what makes them special. Our work involves careful research into the site’s history and field-survey assessments of existing structures to assess their significance, repair needs and opportunities for adaptation. We help clients introduce environmentally sustainable technologies, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve their site’s resiliency in a changing climate.  Our strategic plans enable clients to plan capital projects, structure maintenance and staffing needs, and manage historic sites for future generations.

Building Conservation

Our approach to building conservation emphasizes repair only where necessary, the retention of patina and respect for the layers of time. Through detailed research and hands-on survey work, we help clients understand their building’s history, its current condition and repair needs. We diagnose defects and develop repair methodologies that are appropriate to the specific needs of the building in its environment. We also develop future maintenance plans to help clients care for their assets long-term.
